Writing Successful Conference Abstracts and Presentations

2 hours, online or in person

Writing conference abstracts and preparing conference presentations can be challenging, particularly for researchers who are new to academic conferences or unfamiliar with the conventions and expectations of conference communication.

This workshop aims to clarify what is typically expected from abstracts and conference presentations (either papers or posters), and to offer clear guidelines for conceptualising, preparing and writing impactful content suitable for any conference.

In the first part of the workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • conceptualise highly relevant topics for potential conference papers/presentations
  • compose abstracts that best align with conference themes to increase their chances of acceptance

In the second part of the workshop, we discuss how to prepare, structure and write the content for their presentation, taking into consideration elements such as:

  • clarifying and communicating their key argument effectively
  • narrative structure
  • working with the right level of jargon or technical language
  • relevance and impact

While there is a heavier teaching component in this session, participants will be guided through individual exercises to begin conceptualising and structuring an abstract and presentation. Participants will leave with a much clearer, practical idea of what is expected at conferences and how to meet these requirements while sharing their research confidently and honouring their own communication styles.

By the end of the session, participants will have learned:

  • how to identify and develop suitable topics for conference presentations and papers
  • the key components of a successful conference abstract
  • how to write clear, focused and persuasive conference abstracts aligned with calls for papers
  • how to identify and communicate the central message or argument of a presentation
  • how to structure and write impactful content for a conference presentation
  • how to refine presentation content for clarity, relevance and audience engagement within academic conference settings
